Lowry picks up three wins at Colorado River Invitational

The 2023 season ended with the Lowry High School softball team in the 3A state championship in Mesquite. 

The 2024 squad began its quest to get back to the title game with another trip down south, but his time a little more west and into California.

The Lady Bucks were one of the lucky ones to avoid the nasty weather, spending their time at the Colorado River Invitational in Needles. 

Lowry, now under the direction of Megan Maga, who played at Churchill County and Carroll College, went 3-2 over its five games. 

The new roster is a mix old experienced and youth. There are five seniors, four sophomores, two juniors and a freshman. 

Lowry lost to host Needles 8-2, beat Legacy 10-7, Coachella Valley 15-2, Boulder City 6-0 and lost to Tolleson, Ariz., 15-1.

Lowry had the tall task of face senior pitcher Jaelyn Garcia, who struck out 212 batters and walked just 17 last year, as the Mustangs won the 2A state championship for a second straight year. 

Needles as a team, has won a state record 15 state championships. As a sophomore she struck out 160 batters and walked 11. 

Needles scored the first five runs of the game, including two each in the first two innings. 

Lowry cut the deficit to 5-2 in the third inning, as Hayden Case and Natalya Aguilar scored runs. 

Case had two of Lowry’s four hits and Bailey Peterson and Maddison McClure each had one. 

Guizar got the start in the circle and gave up eight runs on seven hits.

Legacy 7

Lowry got on the right track in its second game of the day that got done at 10 p.m. 

The Lady Bucks jumped out a 6-0 lead in the first inning aided by a two-RBI single by Crisslyn Rodriguez and a two-RBI double from Cambria Tisue.

The Longhorns got half those runs back in the bottom of the first inning, when Lowry extended the lead 7-3 in the third inning, when Savannah Stoker scored on passed ball.

Lowry extended the lead to 10-3 in fourth inning, as freshman Adalyn Entwistle picked up her first high school RBI with a single to score Tisue, who led off the frame with a double. Entwistle then scored on a double by Case.

Entwistle, Tisue and Case each had two hits. Tisue also had two RBI. Rodriguez, Stoker and Peterson each had one hit.

Elisabeth George and Guizar, both sophomores, split time in the circle. George collected the win in her first varsity start, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. 

She struck out four and walked none. Guizar threw an inning and struck out two and walked one.


Lowry 15, 

Coachella Valley 2

Lowry used the long ball and added three doubles in the rout of the California school from Thermal. The Mighty Arabs only two runs came in the first inning.

The Lady Bucks scored six times in the bottom of the first aided by two-RBI doubles from Guizar and Peterson. McClure and Liliana Aguilar added base hits that drove in runs.

Lowry added six more runs in the second inning, as Stoker helped herself out with a grand slam. 

Her first of the year, moved her closer to the all-time state record. 

She currently has 41 career home runs and the record is 46. 

At the moment she doesn’t even hold the school record, which is 43 by Sydney Connors.

McClure collected her first home run of the season, a solo shot in the third and Tisue closed out the scoring with a two-RBI double.

Stoker settled down after the first inning in her first start of the season. She allowed two runs on two hits. She struck out five and walked two.


Lowry 6, 

Boulder City 0

In its second game on Friday, Lowry took on Boulder City, a team they eliminated from the 2023 state tournament.

The Lady Bucks dominated the Southern 3A team, as Entwistle, Stoker, Guizar and Aguilar each had three hits. Stoker, Guizar and Peterson each had two RBI and Peterson collected two hits.

Stoker dominated in the circle, striking out 12 batters and allowing four hits.


Tolleson 15, 

Lowry 1

In bracket play on Saturday morning, Lowry took on Tolleson, a 6A school from Arizona. The Wolverines ended the Lady Bucks run in the tournament with a 15-1 run.

Lowry is scheduled to travel to Sparks on Friday and North Valleys on Saturday. However, that is subject to weather and field conditions.
