Swim team dives into 2024 season


The tri-town swim competition between Lovelock, Yerington and Hawthorne is heating up. Last Saturday, the season kicked off in Yerington with Lovelock competing against Yerington's Desert Fish.

This Saturday, it's Lovelock's turn to host one of its most popular events based on crowd-size and volunteerism. On July 13, Hawthorne hosts the last meet of the year.

Pat Rowe started Lovelock's first swim team in 1974, a year after opening the pool, and has coached ever since.

In Yerington, Sofia Bloyed beat eight competitors in the 7-8 girls 25y breaststroke. (45.75). She also placed first in the 25y freestyle for her age group. 

The 11-12 girls 50y butterfly was a close race between Lily Reynolds (1:21.78), Stella Hughes (1:23.80) and third place winner Jade Albert, all of Lovelock. Reynolds won the 50y breaststroke (1:12.07). Hughes placed first in the 50y freestyle for her age group (1:05.95).

Miley Canchola, Stella Hughes and Lily Reynolds earned the top three spots in the 50 backstroke. Canchola and Hughes finished within a fraction of a second of each other with Canchola at 1.18:37 and Hughes at 1:19.74.

Mallory Evenson won the 50 butterfly (59.81), breaststroke (1:06.29), backstroke (57.59) and individual medley (2:03.31) for 15-18 girls.

Conner Hughes took first place in the boys 6 and under 25y butterfly (1:08.73).

Romin McKinney placed first in the 7-8 boys 25y butterfly, with a time of 00:49.60. He also won the 25 breaststroke for his age group (55.59).

Samael Diarte's speedy finish (46.50) earned him the top spot in the "15-18 boys 50 butterfly." He also won the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, breaststroke and the 100 individual medley for his age group.

Lovelock's Riley Burt beat four Yerington swimmers in the 13-14 boys 50y backstroke. He finished at 53.14.

Iven Malay, Connor Hughes, and Isaac Canchola fined first, second and third in the 6 and under boys 25 breaststroke. Malay was the fastest at 1:05.51. He also won the 25 freestyle for his age group.

This year parents are using the SwimminglyFan app to get live results. The app advises fans and parents to stock up on sunscreen, arrive by 8:15 a.m., stay hydrated and bring their favorite chair and hat.
