Lowry competes in annual northern Nevada weightlifting competition


Lowry High School had 19 student/athletes travel to Reno on May 30-31 for the 34th annual Northern Nevada weight competition at McQueen High School.

The athletes competed in the squat, bench and power clean.

The Buckaroos had nine girls participate including, Victoria Mojica, Mia Gerhard (third in bench), Britain Backus (second in squat, third in bench and second in power clean.

Natalie Mori led the way in power clean and Kelly Zhelayev was first in the squat and bench press.

Damiena Mentaberry placed first in the squat and Alexis Guzman-Podgornik was third in the bench press.  Adajah Milam and Natalya Guizar also competes.

In the JV boys division, Bosten Dennis was first in the squat and Erick Valencia and Jonathan Moser also too part in the event.

Lowry had seven varsity boys in the competition with Erick Guzman second in the squat and first in the bench press. 

Nomar Aguirre was the runner-up in the bench and power clean and Vicente Ochoa was first in the squat. Luke Fentress, Tyler Barrett, Logan Jung and David Walker also took part in the lifting.

“Everyone competed well and Lowry High School put on a great showing,” said LHS football coach and teacher Taua Cabatbat. “I was impressed by how well these kids competed and enjoyed the moment. I am proud of every Lowry High student/ athlete.”
