There’s no stopping the annual Mustang 5K. Besides being a major fundraiser for the PCHS football program, it’s a harbinger of summer.
On Friday evening, 64 runners and walkers took off from Joe Yanni Field and wound their way through Lovelock streets.
After completing the course, they returned to the starting point beneath the Mustang scoreboard in time to watch the sunset.
Two Stiffs Selling Gas and the City of Lovelock sponsored the event.
Mustangs Denzel Zaldivar and Ryan Houston were the first two finishers.
Josiah Hunt recorded the most laps — 34 in one hour. Not surprisingly, the PCHS track team made a strong showing.
Zaldivar and Hunt were part of the 4x200 relay team that won a state championship last month.
The volleyball team was also speedy and enthusiastic.
“But it’s a fun-run, not a race,” said organizer Mike Brooks. Food added to the festive atmosphere. Nicole Reitz’s tacos disappeared quickly. So did coach Lee Houston’s famous sno-cones.
“There were a lot of onlookers and parents to support the runners,” said Brooks. “Thanks to all the kids and families for coming out, to Logan Hunt and Houston Allen for helping set up the course, and to Stephanie Minor (Makers) for the T-shirts.”
