Tri-County Market kicks off this weekend

The Tri-County Market will be in the Winner’s parking lot on select Friday and Saturday afternoons, and even a few evenings, from June through October with fresh produce, local artisan crafts, food trucks and more.

Tri-County Market Board President Susan Galland said that the Market has about 30 different vendors that will be at the markets throughout the season and she and the other Tri-County Market Board members are excited to roll out some new elements.

“We’re trying to bring in local awareness of the nonprofits and trying to help supply the community with fresh produce and locally made crafts,” said Galland.

The Board of Directors includes Galland, Vice President Kristy Cornejo, Secretary Nancy Swindle, Treasurer Debbie Johnson Okuma, and Social Media Coordinator Jessica Drobny.

Their mission is “to provide an opportunity for local farmers, food producers, and artisans to sell their products directly to the consumer in a clean, friendly, and community centered environment.”

Galland said that the Market is going to be trying some events in the evening to see how they work. The evening events will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 21, July 26, and Aug. 30.

“The evening events will be just like the traditional one, but hopefully, it will be a little bit cooler outside and if people are working during the day or on Saturday, as soon as they get off work, they can show up,” explained Galland.

Additionally, the Market will also be taking Senior Coupons, which allow senior citizens to enjoy a discount on produce items from the Market and for the producers to be reimbursed from the Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) Division of Food and Nutrition.

According to the NDA, the purpose of the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program/Farmer Agreement is to provide fresh and healthy fruits, vegetables, honey and herbs from farmers’ markets to senior citizens, benefitting both seniors and markets.

Galland said that the Markets are great activities for senior citizens and that the booklets of coupons are available at the Pleasant Senior Center.

Additionally, Galland explained that she is able to purchase produce from local hobby farmists, which means those farmers do not have to have their own booth at the Market and helps people have access to produce despite the short growing season here.

Galland said that in previous years she has sold out of produce as quickly as an hour and local growers can reach her at 775-304-7907 or through the Tri-County Market Winnemucca Facebook page.

Galland wanted to give a special thank you to the Great Basin Sun, Nomadic Broadcasting, and the Winner’s Casino for their help with spreading the work and hosting the Tri-County Market.
