The future of rodeo is looking pretty good, as a pair of Humboldt County cowgirls swept the top spots at the Nevada Junior High State Finals Rodeo in Winnemucca over Memorial Day weekend.

Five members of the club qualified for the national finals in Des Moines, Iowa.

Louise DeLong was crowned the Nevada state champion all-around cowgirl, as well as the state final all-around title holder.

She won the state championship in pole bending and the reserve state champion in barrel racing. DeLong placed fourth in ribbon roping.

Huntley Byrd was right behind her teammate, collecting reserve Nevada state championship honors.

Byrd was the state champion in barrel racing, reserve champion in pole bending and third in breakaway roping.

Ben Marvel earned the state finals all-around cowboy honors and was the state champion in saddle bronc steer riding and bareback steer riding. 

He finished third in chute dogging and fourth in both bull riding and tie-down roping. Marvel finished third in the all-around cowboy standings.

Bryce Fears finished as the reserve state champion in chute dogging and seventh in the all-around standings and Taylor Hill was third in ribbon roping and fourth in rifle shooting.


Lancaster wins state title in team roping

Battle Mountain’s Logan Lancaster qualified for the national finals in team roping, with partner Pete Mori from Elko.

The national finals are coming up quickly, starting June 23 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa.
