Battle Mountain women charged with murder of Idaho man

CANYON COUNTY, Idaho — Melissa Fay Calumpit and Rosalie Lynn Morris were charged on Friday, July 19, with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the July 12 homicide of Travis Haywood Calumpit in Idaho.

Both women are from Battle Mountain. Travis Haywood Calumpit, a Parma, Idaho resident, died from a gunshot wound, according to the Canyon County Coroner.

Calumpit faces charges of first-degree murder and destruction, alteration, or concealment of evidence, while Morris is charged with aiding and abetting in first-degree murder and in the destruction, alteration, or concealment of evidence. All charges are felonies.

According to Canyon County Prosecutor Nicholas Tyler O'Bryant, Calumpit admitted to premeditating the murder.

"The defendant admitted to knowing a plan to kill the victim," O'Bryant said. "She drove from Nevada to Idaho with a gun, lured the victim to the campground where she shot and killed him … It was a coordinated and calculated plan to kill the victim."

Calumpit's bail was set at $2 million. During her hearing, she informed Judge Kerry Michaelson that she has three children and receives assistance. She requested to call her sister to arrange care for her children. The judge appointed a public defender to her case.

Morris, accused of helping Calumpit plan and execute the murder as well as hiding a cell phone and a gun, also had her bond set at $2 million. She was likewise assigned a public defender.

Calumpit’s preliminary trial was scheduled for July 26. Morris’s preliminary trial is set for Aug. 2 at 8:30 p.m.
