Active Parenting program offers guidance for raising teenagers

Parenting adolescents in today's overwhelming world can be a significant challenge, with many parents struggling to navigate their children through the complexities young adulthood. Teens are dealing with adult issues earlier and earlier in life, including confrontations with drugs, sexuality, and violence. To support parents in shepherding their teenagers, a new series of classes, Active Parenting of Teens, is being offered at the Cooperative Extension Office on E. Fairgrounds Road.

Developed by parenting expert Dr. Michael Popkin, the program aims to equip parents with essential techniques and insights for raising responsible and independent teenagers. The sessions, which are free of charge, are designed to foster family harmony and prepare teens for successful adult lives.

The Active Parenting of Teens program comprises six sessions, each focusing on different aspects of parenting and teen development. These sessions will be led by Candace Cartier, and will feature video content narrated by TV actress Daphne Maxwell-Reid, known for her role on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and by Dr. Popkin himself.

Participants will engage in discussions and activities aimed at providing practical strategies for effective parenting. Topics covered include respectful discipline methods, clear communication skills, and strategies to prevent risky behavior. The sessions also address significant issues such as online safety, bullying, and teen depression.
