It was a pretty good week for three Humboldt County cowgirls at the National High School Finals Rodeo that concluded this past Saturday night at the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Emma Garijo, who is headed to UNLV in the fall finished with two top-11 performance in the world standings. Garijo missed the finals last year because of an injury.

Garijo placed seventh in the world in barrel racing, after a short go performance that saw her finish fourth in a time of 17.226 seconds.

She entered the short go in 14th and jumped seven spots. Garijo placed seventh in the first go-around at 17.387 and she had a time of 17.675 in the second go-around.

In her final high school rodeo, Garijo was looking to take home a world title in pole bending. She had times of 20.070 and 20.063 to place third going into Saturday’s short go.

Needing to pull off her quickest time of the week, Garijo clipped a pole and knocked it down for a time of 25.193, which dropped her to 11th in the final standings.

She also competed in breakaway roping but a no time in the first go-around knocked her out of contention. 

Garijo came back with a time of 13.2 seconds in the second go-around. 

Brynn Barto nearly found herself a world title in pole bending, with three strong runs over the week. 

The top five finishers were decided by a half second.

Barto had runs of 17.615 and 16.975 to set her up for one of the top spots in the short go.

The cowgirl saved her best for last, finishing second in the short go with a time of 17.133. 

Rylee Jo Maryman from At Francisville, La., won with a time of 17.087.

Morgan Beckstrom of Spanish Fork, Utah, won the title at 51.452 and Abagail Olson of Sheridan, Wyo., was second with an average of 51.672.

Barto timed in at 51.723 to give Humboldt County two of the top seven-barrel racers in the world.  

Natalie Mori finished eighth in the world in reined cow horse. Mori scored 289.5 points in the first go-around and 286 in the second. 

She placed seventh in the short go with 291 points for her best performance of the week. She finished eighth with 866.5 points.

Matti Delong competed in a pair of events in Wyoming and finished 50th in goat tying with a time of 18.120, including a run of 7.97 seconds in the second go-around.

In addition, DeLong competed in breakaway roping but she missed her calf in the first performance. She bounced back with a time of 4.74 seconds. 

Lane Byrd placed 59th in boys cutting with 265 points, with scores of 131 and 134. Logan Marshall took part in trap shooting and finished 60th with 91 points.

Carlin’s Italy Jo Holman, and member of the Battle Mountain Rodeo Club, had an average time of 46.582 in pole bending.

She knocked down a pole in her first run for a time of 25.833 and came back with a time of 20.699 in the second go-around.

The duo of Amelia Lancaster and Eli Lancaster took part in team roping but did not have a time in either performance.

It is a short offseason for the high school rodeo clubs, as the new season starts in less than a month, Aug. 16-18 in Eureka.
