Wildfire near Denio spreads to nearly 20,000 acres


DENIO, NV — A wildfire, referred to as the Wilder Fire, broke out near Denio, Nev., on July 7 at 11:23 a.m. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) mobilized firefighting resources to contain the blaze, which has rapidly spread due to dry conditions and strong winds.

"The wildfire started southeast of Denio, just before Denio Summit, and has already consumed over 16,830 acres," said a BLM spokesperson. 

The fire's location is approximately 90 miles north of Winnemucca. The eastern perimeter of the fire, located in the Bilk Creek Mountains, is being actively managed by hand crews and aircraft. Significant progress has been made on the northern, western, and southern portions of the fire, where control lines have been established.

The fire behavior is described as moderate with short-range spotting, fueled by short and tall grass and brush. Firefighting resources include 120 personnel, 13 engines, five Type 2 dozers, two Type 2 initial attack hand crews, one Type 3 helicopter, one Type 2 helicopter, and numerous fixed-wing aircraft. At the time of this article, the fire was expected to have been contained by Friday, July 12. At the time of this story, containment was at 40%.
