Battle Mountain’s Huhta competing at Paralympics Track and Field Trials

It has been years in the making with hard work and set backs but the dream for Battle Mountain’s Devin Huhta is here, as he is competing at the USA Paralympics Track and Field Trials in Miramar, Fla.

The trials start Thursday and conclude on Sunday, as Huhta will be competing in the F12 shot put. In 2023, Huhta finished sixth in the F12 shot put at the ParaPan American Games, Santiago.

Huhta is legally blind, with less than 10% vision and also throws the discus, but puts most of his focus on the shot put.

“I am not totally blind and have some functional vision left,” he said during an interview in 2022. “It’s like looking through straws. There are like islands and I can wave my hand in front of my face and I will not see it at times. At night, you look up to see the stars and I don’t see any of them anymore.”

Huhta is one of the top shot put throwers in the United States and the world in his class.

The Paralympic Trials can be seen on CNBC or streamed on Peacock.
