National High School Finals Rodeo stars Sunday in Wyoming

The long high school rodeo season is hitting an end with the beginning of the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo., on Sunday. The rodeo runs through July 20, with the top 20 finals.

A number of cowboys and cowgirls from the Humboldt County and Battle Mountain rodeo clubs will compete.

Unfortunately, one cowboy will not be there for Humboldt County. Billy DeLong, who was the reserve all-around cowboy for Nevada this year is foregoing the finals for knee surgery and to recover for his college career at New Mexico State. 

DeLong tore is ACL at the Humboldt County Rodeo in May and fought through the injury at the state finals.

He qualified for the finals in saddle bronc, boys cutting and steer wrestling.

After missing last year’s finals due to injury, Emma Garijo is back in her final high school rodeo. She will head to UNLV in the fall

Garijo, the state champion in pole bending, begins her final in the event on the morning of Monday, July 15, Her final run is on Friday, July 19, in the evening.

The state runner-up in breakaway roping will make both of her runs on Wednesday, July 17.

She competes in barrel racing on the evening of Tuesday, July 16 and the morning on Thursday, July 18.

Matti DeLong will make the trip to Wyoming to participate in two events. She will make her first run in barrel racing on the morning of Monday, July 15, with her second run on Friday, July 19, in the evening. She competes in goat tying in the morning performance on Tuesday, July 16 and the evening on Thursday, July 18.

Natalie Mori, the Nevada state champion in reined cow horse, opens her rodeo on the morning of Monday, July 16 and finishes on the evening of Thursday, July 18.

Brynn Barto will take her Nevada state title in barrel racing to Wyoming and she makes her runs on Tuesday, July 16, in the morning and the evening of Thursday, July 18.

Lane Byrd qualifies in boys cutting and will compete in the evening of Tuesday, July 16 and the morning of Thursday, July 18.

Logan Marshall is competing in trap shooting for Humboldt County.

Battle Mountain’s Italy Jo Holman is taking part in pole bending with her performances on the evening of Tuesday, July 16 and the morning of Thursday, July 18.

The duo of Amelia Lancaster and Eli Lancaster will compete in team roping, starting on the evening of Monday, July 15 and the morning of Friday, July 19.
