It's a grand old flag football tournament

About 20 PCHS athletes and recent alumni competed with teams from California and Reno in Saturday's flag football tournament on Joe Yanni Field in Lovelock.

The proceeds will benefit the high school football squad, supplying the funds for equipment bags and helmet bumpers.

The tournament was a group effort. The City of Lovelock and Nevada Infusion sponsored the event.

The soccer girls served hot dogs and hamburgers while the girls basketball team sold snow cones.

Coach Mike Brooks and his assistant Buzz Brooks seemed to be everywhere.

The California teams included Sacramento's Jus Biz and San Jose's Purple Reign.

The Avengers, Gummy Worms, Average Joes, Boulevard Boys and Mighty Ducks came from Reno. The three local teams were P Count, Lovelock and the Mustangs.

Many of the players have shown up for the past four or five summers.

This year, Brooks started the games an hour later than planned due to the triple digit temperatures.

"The heat was difficult at first but got better when the sun went down," he said.

Another consideration was the varied skill levels of the players.

"That's why I played two different divisions," he added, explaining that he's played up to three divisions in previous tournaments.

Jus Biz and Purple Reign compete in big tournaments in California and Las Vegas and it showed on the field with their speed and fast reflexes.

The Avengers and Average Joes also have plenty of experience with the sport.  On Saturday, Jus Biz won the A Division championship.

The other Reno teams are not quite as experienced but play leagues often. The Lovelock teams play locally but are newer to the sport. The Mustangs won the B division trophy.

"I'd like to thank the referees who traveled from Reno to help out. Stephanie Minor from Makers made great gear for the champions," said Brooks. "Thanks to all the teams and players that came out."
