PCHS wrestlers compete at Vaquero Classic

The Pershing County wrestlers traveled to Fernley last weekend for the Vaquero Classic.

Over 30 teams competed, with Spanish Springs, Fernley, Douglas, Lowry and Carson rounding out the top five.

Pershing County came in twentieth with 58 team points.

“Overall, we had some bright spots but it was not our best team performance,” said coach Mike Brooks.

Israel Knight

Jeffrey Elerick (138) and Magdalena Ramirez (138) each placed third. Elerick started his day by pinning a Battle Mountain wrestler.

Next, he beat a Churchill County opponent. Elerick’s quarterfinal defeat to a Tonopah wrestler sent him to the consolation rounds where he won by fall against Spring Creek, Lowry and Carson wrestlers.

Elerick won the third-place match by pinning Mitchell Miller, the Tonopah wrestler who defeated him in the quarterfinals.

A Spanish Springs wrestler pinned Ramirez (5:51) in round one. Ramirez won round two by decision over a Douglas athlete. A Galena wrestler took the third round (Fall 5:19).

Ramirez won her fourth and final match by pinning a Beatty wrestler in 41 seconds.

Angelo Gibson

“I was happy with how Cade Liebsack (150) and Jake Trowbridge (190) wrestled. Justin Carruth (132) won two matches over the weekend.

Those were definitely bright spots. Angelo Gibson (150) and Israel Knight (144) were on the cusp of placing,” said Brooks.

On Tuesday, Jan. 30, Pershing County competed in the West League Duals at Yerington High School.

Results were not available at press time. On Friday, they compete in the East League Duals at Battle Mountain High School.

Be sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, Feb. 10. That’s when Pershing County hosts the Northern 2A Regional Tournament at the high school.

The wrestling team has worked hard and looks forward to competing in their home gym.
