Winnemucca youngster wins at Northern Nevada Masters youth tournament

Winnemucca’s Alexa Azurmendi finished in first place in the ‘C’ Division at the Northern Nevada Masters youth tournament held on 

The tournament was held at Homegrown Bowling Center and was sponsored by the Carson Country U.S. Bowling Congress association. 

Forty-five bowlers participated in the tournament from throughout western Nevada.

After six games (three games qualifier and three games semi-qualifier) and a stepladder final, Azurmendi defeated Raen Muller of Carson City. She also earned $150 scholarship with the win.

Michael Duncan defeated Gabriel Ruvalcaba to become the champion at the tournament. 

Duncan, from Wadsworth, qualified as the Division A winner for the stepladder finals after bowling nine games (six games to qualify and three games in the semi-finals) during the day. 

Each game was bowled on a different pair of lanes. He defeated Benjamin Minder of Wellington.

Minder started the stepladder in eighth position and won four games to bowl Duncan for the A division championship.

Gabriel Ruvalcaba, from Sparks, qualified as the Division B winner after bowling 12 games as he qualified third in the stepladder and had to win three games to become the division champion. 

The divisions are determined by averages. Each of them won a $150 scholarship for winning the division and Duncan earned an additional $50 scholarship for the championship.

Shane Shook of Carson City had the high game of the tournament with a 268 during the Division A qualifying round. In B Division, Landen Geiger had the high series and personal best with a 630 series, including a division high 225 game during the semi-finals. 

In Division C, Madilynn Rhoades of Carson City had the high game with a 189 during qualifying.

A total of $1,625 in scholarships will be awarded to the winners and stepladder finalists of this tournament. 

The funds will be held in accounts in their names until they graduate from high school and can be used at accredited universities and trade schools.
