Gov. Joe Lombardo has joined 15 other Republican governors in asking the federal government to reconsider a proposed mandate dramatically accelerating the nation’s electrification of vehicles.

Last year, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed a mandate that would require every 2 of 3 vehicle batteries be electric by 2032.

On Monday, the governors penned a letter to President Joe Biden asking that the push toward electrification come from American consumers instead of federal mandates.

The governors stated that they do not oppose electric vehicles but have concerns with federal mandates “that penalize retailers and do not reflect the will of the consumer,” calling them “unrealistic, costly and prescriptive.”

In the second quarter of 2023, hybrid and electric vehicles accounted for 16 percent of light-duty vehicle sales in the United States.
