Lady Bulldogs take control of 1A East with wins over Vandals, Mustangs

There is a new leader atop the 1A East standings, as the McDermitt High School girls basketball team knocked off Eureka 50-45 on Friday in McDermitt, in what could be the first of three meetings.

The Vandals came into the night with just one loss to Wendover, Utah, but McDermitt was able to avenge a loss in last year’s regional championship.

Vina Tom and Reign Crutcher paced the Lady Bulldogs with 17 and 11 points, respectively.

Sadie Hinkey added eight points, Kiarra Crutcher six, Alexis Scott five, Riata Palmer two and Laeloni Tobey one.

The two teams meet in Eureka on Friday, Feb. 9, with the top spot in the league at stake and the No. 1 seed in the regional tournament.

McDermitt (9-2 overall, 4-0 1A East) took on Lund on Saturday afternoon and cruised to a 59-19 victory. The Lady Bulldogs raced out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and used a 22-8 run in the second quarter to hold a 37-12 advantage at halftime.

Scott nearly outscored the Mustangs by herself with 17 points, while Kiarra Crutcher and Reign Crutcher added 13 and eight points, respectively.

Tobey netted six points, Tom and Palmer four each, Cierra Smart three and Brianna Sherburn and Nicolette Northrup two each.

McDermitt looks to add to its six-game winning streak with road trips to Jackpot on Friday and Wells on Saturday.

The 1A East Regional Tournament begins on Tuesday, Feb. 13, with opening-round games at home sites.

The No. 1 seed, receives a bye into the semifinals, which takes place on Friday, Feb. 16, in Spring Creek.

Eureka is second in the league at 4-1, followed by Owyhee (3-1), Wells (3-3) and Lund (2-4).
