After spending the first month and 11 games of the season on the road, the McDermitt High School boys basketball team finally saw its home floor this past weekend, opening league play against Jackpot and Wells.

The Bulldogs held off a Jaguar fourth-quarter rally and a last-second 3-point shot to win 47-45.

McDermitt fell to 1-1 in the Eastern 1A and 2-11 overall with a 40-36 loss to Wells on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Eli Northrup knocked down three 3-point field goals in the first eight minutes, including chasing down a loose ball and hitting the long distance shot to give McDermitt a 11-10 lead. 

After Jackpot tied the game at 11 on a free throw, Northrup made his third 3-pointer of the quarter and Josh Northrup made a shot from beyond the arc to give the Bulldogs an 17-11 lead after a quarter of play.

Eli Northrup knocked two more baskets from long distance and Josh Northrup added the other second quarter bucket for McDermitt, as the Bulldogs led 25-17 at halftime.

The eight-point advantage vanished, as Jackpot scored the first seven points of the second half to cut the deficit to 25-24.

A basket by AJ Farmer stopped the run and later in the third quarter, Josh Northrup made a 3-pointer and another basket to push the lead back up to 33-26.

The Bulldogs led 37-31 after three quarters.

With a small lead in the fourth quarter, Eli Northrup banked in a pair of 3-pointers to keep McDermitt in front. Trailing 44-39, Jackpot scored the next four points to make the score 44-43. 

Shandon Camas preserved the lead with a turnaround jump shot to increase the advantage to 46-43 with under a minute to play. 

Jackpot came back down the floor and cut the deficit to 46-45, leaving McDermitt at the free throw line with 3.4 seconds to play. 

Eli Northrup made 1-of-2 foul shots, leaving a chance for Jackpot but the final shot was off.

Eli Northrup and Josh Northrup finished with 22 and 12 points, respectively. Camas joined them in double figures with 11 and Farmer had two points.


Wells 40,

McDermitt could not complete the weekend sweep, as Wells hung for a 40-36 win. Camas paced the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Warrick Crutcher added seven and Eli Northrup six. Chris Scott had five points, Dylan Palmer three and Josh Northrup two.

McDermitt travels to Owyhee on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. (MST) start and will be in Carlin Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
