Fresh off four wins and a tournament championship at the Christmas Classic in Reno, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team remained red hot, with two easy home wins over Jackpot and Wells to start Eastern 1A play.

In its first home game of the season, McDermitt overcame a slow start against Jackpot but held the Jaguars to just five points in the final three quarters to win 61-11.

Leading by just four points after eight minutes of play, the Lady Bulldogs used a 25-4 run in the second quarter to lead 35-10 at halftime.

Jackpot had just one point in the final 16 minutes, that coming on a free throw.

Sophomore Alexis Scott outscored Jackpot by herself with 16 points to go with three rebounds, three steals and three blocks.

Sadie Hinkey, Kiarra Crutcher and Vina Tom each reached double figures 10 points apiece. 

Hinkey grabbed five rebounds, to go with two steals and a block. Tom added four steals.

Laeloni Tobey finished with six points, Nicolette Northrup five and Melissa Hunter and Riata Palmer each scored two points. Palmer added eight rebounds and three steals.


McDermitt 58, Wells 34

McDermitt improved to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in league play with a 58-34 win over Wells on Saturday afternoon in McDermitt.

Eight different players scored for the Lady Bulldogs, with Tom leading the way with 16 points, two steals, two assists and a rebound. 

Northrup and Tobey each scored eight points, with Tobey adding six steals, five rebounds and three assists. 

Palmer finished with seven points and seven rebounds and Crutcher contributed seven points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Hinkey finished with six points, nine rebounds, six blocks and two assists.

Scott and Hunter scored three and two points, respectively.

McDermitt travels to Owyhee on Friday for a 5 p.m. (MST) tip and is in Carlin on Saturday for 1 p.m. contest.

McDermitt hosts Eureka on Friday, Jan. 19, in a rematch of the 2023 Eastern 1A regional championship.  The Vandals lost to Pyramid Lake in the 2023 state championship.
