BMHS wrestlers travel to Idaho


The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team sent two teams to Idaho this past weekend.

One group went to the Buhl Invitational and finished 15th in the team standings with 38 points.

Cruz Jimenez at 120 pounds, Liam Bundrock (126) and Wyatt Madalena (152) finished sixth.

After a first-round bye, Jimenez reached the quarterfinals with a 4-3 win over Riley Hutchinson of Declo. 

He lost in the quarterfinals but rallied for two pins in the consolation round. Jimenez lost his final two matches by a 6-5 and 5-2 decision.

Bundrock reached the semifinals with two byes and a pin over Tayven Kunz of Ririe. However, Bundrock dropped his final three matches.

Madalena reached the fifth-place match the hard way.

He lost his first match in the tournament but rallied for four victories in the consolation round — all by decision. He beat John Spilotros 4-3 in the consolation fifth round.

Ben Geroge at 285 pounds at 285 pounds, reached the consolation fifth round. He had one win on the weekend.


Canyon Ridge Invitational

Members of the team also went to the Canyon Ridge Invitational in Twin Falls.

In the girls division. Dani Madalena finished fourth at 114 pounds. She opened with a first-period pin over Canyon Ridge’s Sara Jean. Madalena reached the semifinals, with a pin over Aubrey Ommundson of Kimberly.

She lost in the semifinals, but bounced back with a pin of Alina Collins of Soring Creek. Madalena lost in the third-place match.

In the boys JV division, Battle Mountain finished 17th in the team standings with 49 points.

Leo Mathias finished fourth at 220 pounds and Joe Scherer was third in the 145B weight class. Anthony Lopez-Hernandez, Kail Bengoa, Andy Wall and Logan Brizzie also picked up wins.

Battle Mountain travels to Elko on Thursday for the Nevada/Idaho duals and will be in Spring Creek this weekend.
