The Lowry High School boys basketball team likes to make interesting for its parents and fans. That was no different on Tuesday, Dec. 20, in South Tahoe.
Just a few days after beating Lassen, Calif., by a point, the Buckaroos needed two overtimes to beat South Tahoe 67-66 in a wild back-and-forth contest.
Lowry ran its winning streak to five games to improve to 6-3 after starting the year 1-3.
Both teams had trouble scoring in the first half, with the Vikings grabbing a 20-17 advantage at halftime. Lowry nearly equaled its first half total with 17 points in the third quarter.
The Buckaroos started the second half on a big run to lead 33-31 going into the fourth quarter.
Both teams traded the lead in the fourth quarter, but Lowry needed a pair of free throws from Jaden Jimenez late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 46 going into the first overtime.
The Buckaroos built a seven-point lead in the first overtime, only to see the Vikings fight back and hit a 3-pointer with seconds left to tie the game at 58.
South Tahoe continued the run into the second overtime and led 63-58. However, that advantage did not last as well, as Lowry came back to tie game at 63.
The Buckaroo lead grew to 67-63, when the Vikings hit a shot to close the gap to 67-65.
Following a Lowry turnover, South Tahoe was fouled with :00.6 left to play.
The Vikings missed the first free throw, forcing them to miss the second on purpose in order to get the rebound and putback.
However, the free throw was banked in, leaving Lowry to just get the ball in bounds.
Matthew Casalez led all scorers with 22 points and Jimenez added 19 and Kasyn Garner 11.
Anthony Guzman netted seven points, ReiCyan Grau five and Dempsey Jenkins and Angus Boyles two each.
Lowry is in southern Nevada for the Mesquite Holiday Madness Tournament at Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite.
Lowry is scheduled to play Lincoln County, Virgin Valley and White Pine.
The Buckaroos open 2024 in Reno at North Valleys on Thursday, Jan. 4, and then make their home debut on Jan. 5, against Elko and Spring Creek on Jan. 6.
