The McDermitt High School girls basketball team came into the final weekend of the regular season with a shot at the top spot in the 1A East and bye into the opening round of the regional tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs came into the final three-game road trip undefeated in league play but dropped two games to stand at 15-4 overall and 10-2 in the 1A East. McDermitt will be the No. 2 seed for the regional tournament.
Owyhee 61, McDermitt 59
When the two teams met in McDermitt, the Lady Bulldogs won by 22 points. However, the Braves remained in striking distance the entire night and used a big third quarter to pull off the upset.
The game was tied at 12 after eight minutes of play, when McDermitt used a 20-point second quarter to lead 32-30 at halftime.
The contest saw the momentum shift, as Owyhee came out of the break with an 18-9 run in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs rallied in the fourth quarter but could not complete the comeback.
Eureka 61, McDermitt 52
The top two teams in the league got together for the second time this season. The Vandals beat the Lady Bulldogs in the 2023 regional championship, but McDermitt won the first regular season meeting by five points (50-45).
McDermitt still had a shot at the top seed with a win, only to see Eureka get off to a quick start and lead 30-22 at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs all but erased the deficit with a 20-13 run in the third quarter.
However, Eureka pulled away late in the fourth quarter to secure the top seed and a first-round bye.
McDermitt 82, Lund 46
McDermitt took out its frustrations on Lund on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale with a season high 82 points.
McDermitt hosted Jackpot on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the 1A East Regional Tournament. Results were not available at press time.
A win moves McDermitt to the semifinals on Friday at Spring Creek High School against the winner of Owyhee and Carlin. Eureka plays the winner of Wells and Lund. The championship is Saturday at 2 p.m.
