High school state wrestling is Friday in Arizona; regional basketball starts this week

The high school wrestling season comes to a conclusion on Friday with the NIAA State Championships at the Anderson Auto Group Fieldhouse in Bullhead City, Ariz.

Battle Mountain, Lowry and Pershing County will be well represented at the event. Battle Mountain won the Northern 2A Regional Championship in Lovelock on Saturday and Lowry finished third in the Northern 3A Regional Championship in Spring Creek.

The state wrestling tournament is a one-day event that starts at 8 a.m.

Regional Basketball

The Lowry High School girls basketball team begins its quest for a third consecutive state championship this weekend in Elko. Lowry was scheduled to play Wooster on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Northern 3A Regional Tournament. However, Wooster forfeited the game after being involved in a fight with Sparks during a game on Dec. 7.

Lowry will play either North Valleys or Elko on Friday. The winners of Fernley/Hug and South Tahoe/Churchill County will play each other on Friday as well. The championship is set for Saturday afternoon at Elko High School.

The NIAA 3A State Championships take place Wednesday, Feb. 21, and Thursday, Feb. 22, at Lawlor Events Center in Reno.

The 1A East Regional Championship is at Spring Creek this weekend. On the girls side, Eureka plays the winner of Wells and Lund on Friday in Spring Creek. McDermitt is the No. 2 seed and played Jackpot on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. A win by McDermitt would move them into the semifinals on Friday against the winner of Owyhee and Carlin.

On the boys side, Eureka is the No. 1 seed and received a bye into the semifinals on Friday. They will play the winner of Jackpot and Wells. McDermitt traveled to Owyhee on Tuesday for the quarterfinals. The winner of that game plays the winner of Lund and Carlin.

The NIAA 1A State Championships take place Thursday, Feb. 22, Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24 at McQueen and North Valleys and the Virginia Street Gym.


The Northern 2A Regional Championship starts Thursday in West Wendover. On the girls side, Pershing County is the No. 2 seed and has a bye into the semifinals on Friday. They will play the winner of Yerington/Sierra Lutheran at 6:20 p.m. (Wendover time). North Tahoe, the No. 1 seed, will play the winner of West Wendover and Coral Academy on Friday at 3 p.m. The championship is set for noon on Saturday.

In the Northern 2A Boys tournament, Battle Mountain takes on North Tahoe on Thursday at 8 p.m. The winner plays top-seeded West Wendover on Friday at 4:40 p.m.

Pershing County plays Yerington on Thursday at 4:40 p.m. with the winner playing on Incline on Friday at 8 p.m. The championship is Saturday at noon. 

The NIAA 2A State Championships take place Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24 at Lawlor Events Center and the Virginia Street Gym.
