Gomez, Harber win Northern 3A regional wrestling titles; Lowry third as a team

Lowry High School’s Kruz Gomez at 113 pounds and Jhett Harber (175) notched individual titles this past weekend   at the Northern 3A Regional Championships at Spring Creek High School.

The Buckaroos will send eight wrestlers to Bullhead City, Ariz., on Friday.

As a team, the Buckaroos finished third in the team standings with 179 points. Elko won the regional title with 287 points and Churchill County (190) placed second.

Gomez wrestled three times on the weekend, pinning North Valleys’ Allan Ayala in 63 seconds in the quarterfinals. 

Gomez advanced to the final with a semifinal pin in the second period and needed just 81 seconds to win the weight class with a pin of Churchill County’s Evan Mackuliak.

Pete Bengochea at 106 pounds, Chris Gildone (144) and Luke Fentress (190) turned in runner-up finishes. 

Bengochea had just two matches on the weekend, pinning Churchill County’s Manuel Barros in the semifinals, but falling to Fernley’s Camron Mcmackin.

Gildone used three pins, including a semifinal win over Elko’s Cael Sellers to advance to the championship. He was knocked off by Fernley’s Riley McCullar.

After a first-round bye, Fentress pinned Fernley’s KeShawn Love and Spring Creek’s Diego Llamas to get to the finals. He lost a 6-2 decision to Elko’s Eli Finlayson in the final.

Bradyn Snyder (138) finished fourth and Kaszin Gonzalez (215) and Logan Jonas (285) each placed fourth to advance to state. Marcas Ricci (126) and TJ Mattson (215) were fifth. 

The NIAA State Championships take place Friday in Bullhead City, Ariz.,
