Battle Mountain wrestlers claim Northern 2A Regional title


If you heard this one before, here you go again — the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team is the Northern 2A champions once again.

It was a little closer than in the past, as Battle Mountain won with 180.5 points, followed by Yerington (167), Pershing County (149), Coral Academy (113.5) and Eureka (84).

Cruz Jimenez at 120 pounds, Liam Bundrock (126), Wyatt Madalena (150) and Ben Geroge won individual championships.

Jimenez had only two matches, winning the first by pin over Eureka’s Jack Christiansen and in the final with a 17-2 win over Yerington’s Eric Pineda.

Bundrock received a first-round bye and then cruised to the title with pins of Eureka’s Thomas Schweble and Yerington’s Set Otto.

Madalena made his way through two Pershing County wrestlers at 150 pounds, pinning Samael Dirate in the semifinals and pinning Angelo Gibson in the final.

After a first-round bye, Geroge needed just 33 seconds to pin Vicente Huizar of Coral Academy and a third-period pin in the final against Yerington’s Liam Foster.

Anthony Lopez-Hernadez earned a second-place finish at 138 pounds. He won his first match by pin over Eureka’s Aden Adams by lost in the final to Pershing County’s Jeffery Elerick. 

Logan Brizzee was second at 165 pounds for the Longhorns. He pinned Yerington’s Corbin Sencion in the semifinals but lost to Wyatt Hughes in the championship.

Aden Jenkins at 132 pounds, Joe Scherer (138), Andy Wall (157) and Leo Mathias (215) placed third on the day and advanced to the state championships.

Jenkins received a bye into the semifinals, where he lost to Eureka’s Orlando Casas. Jenkins came back through the consolation round to beat Pershing County’s Justin Carruth and Ashton Jimenez.

Scherer pinned Pershing County’s Braxson Bird in the quarterfinals but lost to Pershing County’s Israel Knight. Scherer and Bird wrestled again in the third-place match with Scherer winning by pin.

Wall had a bye into the semifinals, where he lost to Coral Academy’s Leonardo Guillen-Garcia. Wall came back in the third-place match to pin Pershing County’s Cade Liebsack.

Mathias lost in the semifinals to Yerington’s Joe Thompson and beat Pershing County’s Logan Hunt for third place.

Kail Bengoa finished fifth at 144 pounds.

The high school wrestling season comes to a conclusion on Friday with the NIAA State Championships at the Anderson Auto Group Fieldhouse in Bullhead City, Ariz.
