Artist in Residence continues for 10th year at Black Rock conservation area

WINNEMUCCA — Black Rock Field Office, in partnership with Friend of Black Rock-High Rock, has co-hosted the 10th Annual Artist in Residence (AiR) program for the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area.

“It is so exciting to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Artist in Residence program, which celebrates the Black Rock NCA through unique artwork,” said Mandy DeForest, Black Rock Field Office Manager.

The 2023 Artists-in-Residence are Rachel Stiff and Luke Rizzotto. These artists worked together in collaboration to create “Indefinite State”, an exhibit to reflect “the ever-changing conditions of the Black Rock Desert and surrounding National Conservation Area, as evidenced through light, weather, climate change, and human activity.”

Rachel created monoprints inspired by the cycles of the moon and Pleistocene Lake Lahontan. Luke is an artist who primarily works in digital and emerging media; his work focused on digital artwork to display landscapes slowly morphing and changing over time.

The artwork is currently on display at the California Trail Interpretive Center, in Elko, Nevada from January 31 through April 30, 2024 at the California Trail Center, located at 1 Interpretive Center Way in Elko, Nevada.
