The Pershing County boys basketball team lost to Yerington (58-44) and North Tahoe (55-48) this past week.

They hosted Yerington on Tuesday and traveled to North Tahoe on Saturday.

Pershing County now stands at 8-15, overall, and 7-9 in the 2A Northern league.

Amare Rosas led the scoring against Yerington with 14 points, a season-high for the freshman point guard. Michael Reitz, a junior, scored eight points.

Travis Donaldson led against North Tahoe with 18 points. Trenton Rhodes also scored in the double digits with sixteen.

Pershing County senior Aaron Kienbaum scores against Yerington for the Mustangs.

The score tied up or stayed close throughout much of the game.

"It was 45-44 after three quarters," said coach Jesse Canchola. "A physical battle. But our four to their eight in the fourth is what got us. The kids played their hearts out. We just have to get better skillfully to match our effort."

The Mustangs played their last home game of the year on Tuesday, Feb. 6, on senior night. Results were not available at press time. The Silver Stage Nighthawks (0-16) visited.

Pershing County plays its last game of the regular season against the Oasis Academy Bighorns (5-10) on Feb 9 in Fallon.

Canchola says the boys still have a shot at qualifying for zone, a goal they'd love to achieve.

"It's exciting. The program has come a long way in four years. It's humbling," he said.

The regional playoffs will be held in West Wendover Feb. 15-17.

The season culminates with the state championships Feb. 23-24. It takes place in Reno at Lawlor Events Center and the Virginia Street gym.
