The Lowry High School wrestling team officially started its postseason run last weekend in Fallon with the Northern 3A duals. The Buckaroos lost just one dual — two the -time reigning state champion in Elko. Lowry was 10-1 over the weekend.
Kruz Gomez, Chris Gildone and Jhett Harber earned No. 1 seeds for this weekend’s Northern 3A Regional Championships in Spring Creek. Each wrestler went undefeated at 11-0.
Marcas Rici and Logan Jonas finished 10-1 and Luke Fentress and TJ Mattson were 9-2.
“It was a lot of wrestling in two days,” said LHS coach John Brooks.” We had a decent weekend, just losing a good dual with Elko. Elko is what we thought they were. Some of the kids put themselves in a good spot for the regional tournament. some others will have to do it the harder way.”
Lowry 50, Spring Creek 27
Lowry opened the weekend with Spring Creek and trailed 21-6 after five matches, with the lone win coming from Gildone at 144 pounds. Jose Villagomez started a six-match win streak with a 7-1 win over Braxton Benavides. Harber, Fentress, Jonas, Pete Bengochea and Gomez won by pin at Mattson won by forfeit at 215 pounds.
Lowry 78, Truckee 4
Truckee won its only match in an 8-0 decision at 132 pounds. Gildone and Harber were the only other Buckaroos to have matches and they won by pin.
Lowry 84, Dayton 0
Lowry won seven matches by forfeit against Dayton and Gildone, Urijah Davis, Alessandro Huerta, Fentress, Ricci, Jayden Howard and Brayden Snyder won by pin.
Lowry 62, North Valleys 9
Lowry dropped just matches to North Valleys, including a 10-8 loss in sudden death overtime. Huerta, Harber, Fentress, Mattson, Gomez, Ricci, Snyder and Gildone won by pin. Elijah Lange at 120 pounds won by technical fall, while Villagomez picked up a 12-10 win. Jonas and Howard won their matches by a 6-2 decision.
Elko 48, Lowry 30
Late in the day on Friday, Lowry took on Elko and fell behind 18-6, with the only win from Harber. The Buckaroos rallied to take a 27-18 lead after pins from Jonas and Bengochea, an 8-6 win by Gomez over Camden Jensen and a forfeit for Mattson.
Elko took control from there with four straight wins. Gildone closed the gap with a 5-0 win over Cael Sellers but it was not enough to win the dual.
Lowry 60, Sparks 21
In the final dual on Friday night, Lowry got all its wins from forfeits, while Sparks won the four matches that were contested.
Lowry 51, Fernley 30
In the first dual on Saturday, Lowry began with Fernley and raced out to a 39-6 lead after wins from Harber, Fentress, Mattson, Jonas, Bengochea, Gomez and Ricci. Snyder and Gildone also won by pin for the Buckaroos.
Lowry 52, South Tahoe 26
Lowry doubled up South Tahoe with wins from Fentress, Jonas, Bengochea, Gomez, Ricci, Howard, Snyder, Gildone and Harber. Howard defeated William Causing 11-10 and Snyder cruised to a 10-2 victory over Brady Higgins.
Lowry 40, Churchill County 35
Lowry found itself in a battle with host Churchill County. The Buckaroos led 29-20 after Gildone pinned Caden McKnight. However, the Greenwave won the next three matches to go in front 35-29. With two matches left, Harber tied the dual at 35 with a pin over Colton Blankenship and Fentress won the dual with a 39-second pin against Jason Lewis.
Lowry 60, Wooster 24
Lowry ran out to a 48-6 lead on the strength of six forfeit wins against the Colts. Gomez, Lange and Ricci all won by pin in that stretch. Harber and Fentress also won by pin.
Lowry 84, Hug 0
Lowry finished the weekend with an 84-0 win over Hug.
Lowry travels to Spring Creek this weekend for the Northern 3A Regional Championships. The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the state championships in Bullhead City, Ariz., on Feb. 16.
