McDermitt girls split first two games at West Coast Jamboree


The McDermitt High School girls basketball team escaped Nevada following Christmas to play in the West Coast Jamboree in Dublin, Calif.

Dublin is just west of San Francisco and the tournament has 13 different brackets for 104 different schools.

McDermitt opened with a 47-38 win over St. Vincent de Paul on Friday, Dec. 27, in the Pearl Bracket.

St. Vincent de Paul is a Catholic Prep school in Petaluma, Calif., and has just over 200 students and costs over $20,000 to attend a year.

In the semifinals played this past Saturday, McDermitt suffered its first loss of the season with a 59-29 defeat to Watsonville. The Wildcatz improved to 10-1 on the season.

Watsonville has over 2,200 students in its school, while McDermitt has just over 30.

McDermitt played Sacramento on Monday afternoon and results were not available at press time. 

McDermitt begins its run at another state tournament, opening Northern 1A East play on Friday at home against Eureka at 6 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs host Lund on Saturday at noon. 

The top five teams in the league advance to the Northern 1A East Tournament in Elko from Feb. 13-15. 

Heading into conference play, Wells is 10-2 and Eureka and McDermitt are 9-1.
