Two of the perennial top teams in Nevada were battling out for first place again, this time this past Saturday at the Lovelock Invitational at Pershing County High School.
The Lowry High School wrestling team has won 16 state championships, second most in state history.
Spanish Springs is the top dog in Northern 5A wrestling and just surpassed Lowry’s consecutive dual streak of 109.
The team title came down to the final match at heavyweight, as Spanish Springs won the bout to narrowly beat Lowry 206.50-205.
“I thought we had it won,” said LHS coach John Brooks. “Those guys have a deep team and are good for a reason. It was still a good tournament for us.”
McQueen finished third with 181.50 points and Renno (131) and host Pershing County (122.50) rounded out the top five.
Pete Bengochea at 113 pounds and Odyn Santos (138) collected individual titles for the Buckaroos.
Lowry's Logan Jonas wrestlers North Valleys' Nolan Weese in a quarterfinal match at the Lovelock Invitational on Saturday.
Bengochea faced just three opponents and had little trouble on the day. He won all three bouts, including the championship over Reed’s Tyler Thomas with 13 seconds left in the second period.
Santos collected two byes into the quarterfinals and was on the mat for only 45 seconds in that match. Santos earned his title with a 7-0 decision over North Valleys’ Nikolis Pena.
Kruz Gomez was the runner-up at 126 pounds and had three wins on the day. Gomez defeated Eureka’s Orlando Casas to reach the final.
In the championship, Gomez faced a familiar opponent in South Tahoe’s Theodore Bergquist. Gomez beat the Viking wrestler twice in Winnemucca last weekend but was knocked off in the final.
Giovanni Monroy finished second at 160 pounds, as he collected two wins by pin. Monroy lost to McQueen’s Anthony Uccelli.
Edward Jones (106), Randy Patterson (175) and Logan Jonas (285) each placed third.
Jones lost in the semifinals, only to rally through the consolation bracket with three wins, including a 7-6 decision in the third-place match against Bishop Union’s Jesus Delgado.
Patterson won his opening match and lost in the quarterfinals and came back with two wins, including his second victory over South Tahoe’s Luis Salas.
Jonas won his first bouts in 19 seconds with pins but lost to Landen Irelan of North Valleys. Jonas claimed third place with a 12-second pin of Spanish Springs’ Frank Hawkins.
Teyo Gomez (144) and Ben Marvel (150) each placed fourth for Lowry. Gomez was busy on the day with seven matches.
He picked up five wins. Marvel notched three wins on Saturday.
For the Lowry Gold, Jared Foy (165) was second in the JV division. Eli Long placed third and Blaze Souza, Gabriel Hogue and Michael Heikkila were fourth.
Lowry travels to Reno this weekend for the Sierra Nevada Classic.
