Pershing County Library receives LSTA grant for RFID technology

The Pershing County Library received an influx of funding through a grant that will help implement RFID technology within the agency.

According to officials, on Sept. 11, the library was awarded a $41,702 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Nevada State Library, Archives, and Public Records to implement RFID technology into our infrastructure. RFID stands for 'Radio Frequency Identification.'

“Each one of the library’s 40,000 items will get 'tagged' with a special sticker that communicates wirelessly with the library’s computers through radio frequencies, letting us scan entire stacks of books at a time without even opening them,” said library director Kameron Mitchell. “This means faster processing times for us, and quicker service for you.”

Mitchell said that the funds will be used to purchase 42,000 rectangular tags, 4,000 circular tags, three RFID desktop pads for staff, two all new self-checkout stations, and three RFID-enabled gates.

“These gates are installed at the main entrance of the building and will alert staff to foot traffic and potentially miss-scanned items or theft,” Mitchell said.

Along with these items come expert installation and assistance from Envisionware, Inc. Dates of installation are to be determined and will be announced on a later date.
