Pershing County’s Angelo Gibson gains the advantage in his match.

Last weekend, the Pershing County High School wrestling team competed at Cody Louk, McQueen JV and Nevada Queens tournaments.

"We sent kids to three different events and positives and success were everywhere," said coach Mike Brooks.

At the Cody Louk in Winnemucca, the Mustangs finished eighth out of 28 teams, no small feat considering they sent only six wrestlers: Jeff Elerick (144), Angelo Gibson (157), Israel Knight (150), Wyatt Hughes (175), Jake Trowbridge (190) and Justin Carruth (132).

Four Mustangs advanced to the semifinal round. Another took a close loss in the qualifier.

Elerick and Gibson each finished first in their weight ranges. Knight placed second. Hughes came in fifth in the 175-pound weight class.

"I was also proud of Justin (Carruth) for earning a victory before being knocked out," said Brooks.

"Overall, I was happy with the results of the meet but there are always some you want back," said Brooks. "The kids continue to improve and are working hard."

Meanwhile, assistant coach Buzz Brooks took nine wrestlers to compete in the McQueen JV tournament at McQueen High School in Reno.

They included James George (120), Jaxson Happy (132), Cade Liebsack (165), Landen Burt (126), Anthony Gibson (175), Ayden Anderson (106), Rylie Burt (132), Houston Allen (215) and Aiden Talley (215).

Happy and George each finished the day undefeated.

Happy finished first at 132 pounds while George won gold at 120 pounds. Liebsack and Landen Burt each finished third.

"Cade, Landen, Burt and Anthony had strong days," said Brooks.

Magdalena Ramirez (140) wrestled in the Nevada Queens Tournament in Sparks. Girls from 28 Northern Nevada schools competed.

"Magdalena landed a couple of wins," Brooks said.

She pinned a Spanish Springs wrestler in 36 seconds and a South Tahoe wrestler in well under two minutes.

This Friday there is a JV tournament in Spanish Springs. Lovelock's annual home tournament is on Saturday.
