The Pershing County football season-opener ended in a landslide win for the Mustangs.

Pershing County hosted the Wooster Colts under the Friday night lights and beat them 49-7, a far cry from last year’s 33-0 Mustang loss against the Colts.

The PCHS spirit squad’s enthusiasm more than made up for what they lacked in numbers. Mallory Evenson, Hailey Charles and Savannah Short kept the home crowd fired up.

Travis Donaldson ran in a couple of touchdowns, including one of Pershing’s first offensive plays.

Michael Reitz (3) and Luis Sanchez (5) defend against the Wooster Colts in a non-league game hosted by Lovelock.

The senior QB tossed a touchdown pass to Taylor Montes, a sophomore standout. Denzel Zaldivar, also a senior, ran well according to the coach.

“None of it would have been possible without exceptional offensive line play, led by three seniors - Danny Jimenez, Efrain Aceves and Brian Flores,” said coach Mike Brooks.

“Defensively, we had a pair of interceptions by Ayden Montes and Josiah Hunt. Tyrn Sam and Efrain Aceves played well at linebacker, and Jeffrey Elerick landed a couple of tackles for us.”

This Friday, the Mustangs travel to Portola, CA. It will be the first game of the year for the Tigers.

They ended last season at the top of the Cascade Valley league.

Their record (12-1) included an early 42-14 win against the Mustangs at PCHS. The Mustangs look ready and eager to compete against the top tier team.

Taylor Montes (16), Tyrn Sam (32) and other Mustangs go in for the tackle.

The spirit squad will also make the trip and hope to cheer both the JV and varsity boys to wins. The Mustangs begin league play at home on Friday Aug. 30.

They will host the North Tahoe Lakers. On Friday, Sept. 13, the Mustangs host the Incline Highlanders.

“We were happy with how we opened up the season. We cleaned up a lot of errors from last week’s scrimmage, and that was great to see. There were more errors we will be getting back to fix,” Brooks said. “The crowd was great. We couldn’t be more thankful for the support we receive for all athletics, including football.”
