The Pershing County Mustang football team scrimmaged in Battle Mountain last Saturday.
A dozen senior players, several juniors and a sophomore made the trip from Lovelock to scrimmage with Lowry, White Pine, Battle Mountain, Spring Creek and Elko.
"It was a great day to get experience against all those teams. It's nice to get the reps before the season, and the competition is good for us," said coach Mike Brooks, now launching his seventh year as head football coach.
Among the Mustangs were two all-state first teamers, Izayuh McGlothin (RB/DB), Tyrn Sam (FB/LB) and two second teamers Kaden Chambers (O Line) and Travis Donaldson (QB).
The senior players are McGlothin, Sam, Chambers, Donaldson, Landon Smith, Luis Sanchez, Denzel Zaldivar, Daniel Jimenez, Efrain Aceves, Wyatt Hughes, Brian Flores and Braxson Bird.
Taylor Montes, Ramon Sanchez, Marcus Allen, Josiah Hunt, Ashton Jimenez, Logan Hunt and Jeffrey Elerick are juniors. Jake Trowbridge is a sophomore.
Last year, the coaches pulled Trowbridge, Josiah Hunt and Elerick from JV to compete at the State tournament at Allegiant Stadium, the home of the Raiders.
The Mustangs ended the year as State runners-up and league champions.
Most of the Mustangs are returners. Brooks hopes their experience will light up the scoreboard once the 2024 season begins.
