The Carson City School District is joining the growing list of schools looking to curb cellphone distractions in classrooms.
Starting this school year, students in grades 6 through 12 will need to store their cellphones and other devices into pouches until the end of the school day, the district said in a press release.
Students will be able to keep their devices in their backpacks, but won’t be able to access them without visiting an unlocking station.
The district said the pouches will also help reduce cyberbullying and cheating.
The announcement comes after the Clark County School District announced it would implement non-locking, signal-blocking pouches at some of its schools.
The Carson school district said it will make accommodations for students who need their phones for health needs.
Students may be allowed to access their phones during emergency situations if officials deem it’s safe to do so.
