Matti DeLong leads the way for Humboldt County at Washoe Rodeo


Humboldt County’s Matti DeLong took home a pair of event wins at the Washoe High School Rodeo, as the Nevada High School Rodeo Association made a stop on Match 30-31.

DeLong set an average time of 31.259 seconds in barrel racing to beat out White Pine’s Brooklyn Sena by half a second. DeLong won the second performance with a time of 15.250, the fastest on the weekend.

She also won the girls cutting average by six points, sweeping both performances and finishing with 148 points. 

DeLong placed 12th in pole bending and 17th in goat tying.

Emma Garijo captured a performance win in pole bending with a time of 21.194 to win the average over Eureka’s Quil Filippini (44.114-44.233). Garijo collected two top-10 finishes in barrel racing and was seventh in the average.

Brynn Barto won the second performance of breakaway roping with a time of 3.050, the quickest on the weekend but placed eighth in the average after missing her first calf. 

She and partner Scarlett Buchana were eight in team roping and Barto placed 12th in goat tying.

Battle Mountain’s Amelia Lancaster won the first performance of breakaway roping with a time of 3.090 and was fifth in the average. 

Lancaster finished eighth in the goat tying average, which included a third-place outing in the first performance.

Italy Jo Holman was the runner-up in the second performance of pole bending at 21.477 but knocked down a pole in her first run and was eighth in the average.

On the boys side, Humboldt County’s Billy Delong was second in boys cutting with 142 points, with teammates Lane Byrd and Cooper Hill fourth and fifth, respectfully. 

Lovelock’s Jacob Burle was sixth in cutting. DeLong added a sixth-place finish in tie-down roping.


Junior High Results

Humboldt County’s Huntley Byrd swept the two performances in barrel racing to win the average at 31.173, with teammates Louise DeLong and Macy Marvel sixth and 13th, respectfully.

DeLong won the second performance of breakaway roping with a time of 4.10 and was sixth in the average after missing her calf in the first performance. 

DeLong added a fifth-place outing in goat tying, while Battle Mountain’s Landry Meiman was eighth. 

Humboldt County claimed for of the five top spots in pole bending, with Byrd winning and DeLong finishing second. Marvel placed fourth and Taylor Hill fifth. DeLong and Henry Buchanan were fourth in ribbon roping.

On the boys side, Ben Marvel won the saddle bronc with 56 points and chute dogging by nearly 11 seconds. 

He finished second in bareback riding and tie-down roping and third in cutting. 

Bryce Fears won the boys breakaway average and was a spot behind his teammate to finish second in chute dogging. Fears was fourth in goat tying.

Battle Mountain’s Logan Lancaster and Elko’s Pete Mori won the team roping average and Huntley Byrd and Bryce Fears were ninth.  

Winnemucca will host is rodeo May 4-5 and the association will be back at the Winnemucca Event Center from May 22-27 for the state finals.
