Longhorns drop three games


The Battle Mountain High School baseball team was back on the road this past weekend to face league-leading West Wendover.

The Wolverines held on to the top spot in the Northern 2A, sweeping      three games from the Longhorns.

West Wendover won 10-0 on Friday and twice on Saturday (6-5, 9 innings and 11-3). 

Battle Mountain dropped to 4-14 in the Northern 2A and 5-18 overall.


West Wendover 10, Battle Mountain 0

West Wendover senior pitcher Teague Neilson was dominant on the mound, as he struck out 15 in the five-inning win. 

Eric Fernandez had the lone hit for Battle Mountain and also reached on an error in the third inning. 


West Wendover 6, Battle Mountain 5

Battle Mountain led 3-1 after three innings of play and 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when the Wolverines score three runs to tie the game with two outs. 

West Wendover scored the winning run on a ground ball to shortstop, which led to the runner scoring from third.

Wiatt Kelley had three of the seven hits.


West Wendover 11, Battle Mountain 3

In the series finale, Battle Mountain grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the first inning on a single by Daniel Andrade to score Daniel Lara. 

The Longhorns increased the lead to 3-1 in the second inning off a ground ball that was mishandled allowed two runs to score. That turned out to be the final runs for Battle Mountain.

West Wendover plated five runs in the bottom of the second inning to go in front 6-3 and broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning.

Angel Guadarrama, Dario Jimenez, Andrade, Mills and Lara each had one hit.

Battle Mountain is back on the road this weekend in Yerington.
