A week after dropping a 1-0 contest to Fernley on the road, the Lowry High School girls soccer team got off to another slow start against Churchill County this past Saturday in Winnemucca to close out the first half of the Northern 3A East conference.
The Greenwave scored a pair of first-half goals and held on for a 4-2 win. The first goal came in the seventh minute and the second came with five minutes left in the first half.
Lowry goalie, Cleo Fowler came out to play the ball, but could not get to the ball in time and the Churchill County striker finished off the goal.
The Lady Bucks began to get looks at the goal in the second half and cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 60th minute off a corner kick from Maite Avalos, that Alia Novi finished off.
The Greenwave tamed the comeback for a few minutes, getting a goal back three minutes later.
The scoring barrage continued with a third goal in five minutes, as Novi took a pass from Britain Backus and her shot went off the top of the goalies hands and into the net.
Lowry's Kepa Hilbish collides with Churchill County goalie Natalie Jensen as she attempts to score a goal.
Novi nearly tied the match at 3-3 but her close-range shot hit the upper cross bar and came straight down in front of the goal line. Churchill County was able to clear the ball.
Lowry had another chance as later in the second half, as Backus and Novi broke free but a pass by Backus was just off as Novi crashed into the back of the net.
Churchill County stopped the comeback with a goal in the 78th minute to hold on for the win.
Lowry is of this weekend and hits the road for four straight matches, beginning on Oct. 6, in Spring Creek at 4:45 p.m. Lowry travels to Elko on Oct. 7, at 11:45 a.m.
Lowry is tied for third in the Northern 3A East at 6-3 with Fernley.
The Vaqueros hold the tiebreaker with their 1-0 win over the Lady Bucks.
Elko leads the league at 8-0 and Churchill County is second at 8-1. Spring Creek is fifth with a 5-2 record. The top four teams advance to the Northern 3A Regional Championships.
