After a rough start to the Northern 2A season, the Battle Mountain High School volleyball team notched its first league win of the season, with a four-set victory over Silver Stage on Friday night in Battle Mountain.
The Lady Longhorns cruised to a 25-11 win in the opening set and led 8-2 in the second.
However, the Nighthawks went on a 12-4 run to go in front 14-12 and won the set 25-20.
Neither squad could break free in the third set until the late going. Battle Mountain led 20-18 but missed its next serve, only to have Silver Stage give the point right back.
Lauryn Avey followed with three consecutive aces, all of her aces on the night to put the Lady Longhorns ahead at 23-19. Leading 24-21, Battle Mountain won the set off a missed serve by Silver Stage.
The Lady Longhorns scored eight of the first 10 points of the fourth set, but that lead dwindled to 21-20, when Olivia Lemaire followed with a kill and Thalia Gonzalez provided an ace to secure the win.
Stevlana Martinez had a team-high nine kills to go with two blocks.
The Lady Longhorns finished with 22 aces, with six of those from Asier Iturriaga and five more from Heidy Amezcua. Lindsey Bleak, Avey and Gonzalez each had three. Bleak added a team-high seven digs
Battle Mountain hosts Pershing County on Friday at 5 p.m. and Coral Academy on Saturday at noon.
