Desert Town Reflections

Fading memories

I don't have my most frequently called numbers programmed into my phone like most people do these days. I still have to search through my little black book when I can't recall the one I need, which is most times.

And recently I've been noticing, as I leaf through those pages, that so many names and numbers listed are those belonging to old friends who have since past and gone.

I'd really like, if I just got the chance, to chat with them one more time, find out how they're doing and how things really are on the other side.

But no can do. I'm afraid I don't have the area code for the hereafter.

Have you ever thought of, let's say when you're watching an old western movie from the 50's, that all those characters have long since been and gone?

But they come alive again and play out their starring roles for you when you decide to roll the film.

But if we can't keep our show going on forever, many people would really like their names, deeds and achievements remembered.

They don't want to simply drift away as a fading memory.

Well buildings, streets and towns are often named after people of notoriety. If they had big egos then they should be happy that their names live on after them.

Have you ever noticed how many towns, counties and high schools are named Washington or lincoln?

I'm thinking how people like Cesar, Napoleon and Katherine the Great were all characters cast in their roles and playing their individual parts. And they did so until their final exit scene and the curtain dropped.

But why could they not go on to select a new and even better role in yet another play?

And wasn't it Shakespeare himself who spoke about all the world being a stage and each of us playing our separate parts? So it appears to me what we need is a talented, competent and responsible director.

I see it funny how actors will often refer to their roles as "My character did such and such". They see the characters identity in the third person and are not confusing themselves with their part.

I see a name, great or small, as just an identity tag, not the individual him or herself.

You see, you were you and I was I ever before we received our names. And chances are we will still exist well after these names are but  faded memories

So, it seems to me that we need more action drama and exciting adventures to play out. We need better lighting, music and a heightened emotional response.

Well look at sports, politics and national conflicts going on presently. Oh but these appear to be grinding down and becoming terribly serious. The thrill and spirit of play look to be dwindling.

Could it be that we've become soft and pampered living easy lives and that our modern conveniences have taken the fun and enjoyment out of living?

Where are the adventures and challenges of the game today? All the mountains have been climbed, the seas crossed and the jungles mapped. You can now even explore them on Google Earth!

You don't have to venture out in the wild with a rifle to hunt for dinner. All you need do is call Dominoes!

Our planet has been tamed and conquered and all our dragons have been slain. There's no more need to fight wolves and bears to survive.

I miss the pioneering days of the Old West even with it's troubles and hardships, it also held hopes and dreams of fortune and glory.

So what do you say we strike this set and create a totally new one?

Okay then. Lights, camera, action. SHOWTIME!
