Desert Town Reflections

Our precious ship

As the world turns and our seasons change, we now find ourselves slipping from August into September with a seemingly ever-increasing uncertainty of a bright and improved future.

I know this sounds odd coming from an eternal optimist such as myself. But the facts, political, economic and every day social events continue to reveal the unraveling of our world as we’ve known it.

There are rumblings of a return of covid along with masks, social restrictions, new vaccines and all accompanied with all the horrors we thought and hoped we had seen the end of in the past couple of years.

Can we and do we want to go through that dark period again?

If our political scandals continue to develop as they currently are, with donkeys at war with elephants, then our present administration may end in disgrace and impeachment. Meanwhile, our former administration leader, who is well ahead in the polls and promising to make everything great again come next November; well, if the opposition has its way, Trump may end up behind bars for life!

So, with this crazy political circus, how can we possibly have a fair, orderly and legitimate election?

How can our United States remain united?

The vicious, meat grinding process of death and destruction still continues in Ukraine, although it appears to be nearing its ultimate conclusion. Total unaccountable loss of life, hope and dignity results after all the billions of dollars tossed into that inferno. And it all could have been so easily avoided and prevented.

To me it clearly shows that mankind is his own worst enemy.

Some sort of cessation of hostilities, truce and reluctant settlement may be reached shortly for the bombed-out nation rendered to ashes and ruin.

But then again, more military conquest and destruction may start all over again on the opposite side of the globe on an island they call Twain. That is if the neocon warmongers get their way.

I could go on and on, dear reader, about our mounting unpayable debt, teetering stock market, the hollowed-out decay of our crumbling inner cities and the pathetic outlook of our youth, but I’m sure you’re aware of all this and how it rolls out in our nightly news.

I think there were many mile markers along our path where things really changed and went from bad to worse. 2019 comes to mind as our most recent step down.

And, sadly, I don’t see any major responsible effort and drive currently for a turnaround or positive solutions to be implemented. Who is there to right our sinking ship?

And our ship, sadly, does appear to be about to sink.

More and more these days you hear about that drastic possible decision when military forces are desperate and driven to extremes - the actual use of tactical nukes!

Of course, it’s insane, lights out psychotic and totally destructive of any and all concerned. But they actually consider such a totally extreme outcome!

Such people, even though they are world leaders and high-ranking officials, should be immediately relieved of duty and detained. Responsible and ethical adults should step up and take the helm. Order and sanity needs to be maintained.

Man’s urge toward survival has kept him alive and his head above water for these many thousands of years. And I think it’s time for that urge to kick back in.

You don’t just want survival for yourself but for your kids, your family and your community. And the family of man is your community on a larger scale.

Religion and philosophy has been teaching us this for ages and I think it’s time to revive this awareness.

We as individuals have more potential for goodness, compassion and greatness than anyone has ever let it be known.

Even though the vast majority of our human family are well intentioned and just want to get along and live a decent life, there seems to be a small minority we could call “the forces of darkness”.

They seem to be battling for control and the eventual demise of our world here today.

So, do we let them punch holes in the bow, sink our precious ship taking us down with them to the deep darkness?

Well then, I ask, what can you and I do to help right our precious ship?
