The Lowry High School girls golf team got its Northern 3A season started under beautiful conditions in Elko County last week.
The Lady Bucks kicked off the season on Wednesday, Sept. 6, in Spring Creek and finished third as a team with a score of 456, as the top six teams were separated by just 12 shots.
Wooster a newcomer to the Northern 3A and who replaced Douglas in the league won with a score of 452, while South Tahoe was second at 453.
Fernley (461), Elko (464), Churchill County (490) and Spring Creek (492) rounded out the scores.
Wooster’s Rya Montoya, who placed 19th at last year’s 5A state championship, was the low medalist with a round of 78. Fernley’s Nadia Velasquez (90) and Spring Creek’s Haxel Zastrow (95) were second and third, respectively.
Katie Cassinelli led the way for Lowry and was fourth overall at 96. Lainey Novacek carded a 103, Jordyn Medicine Cloud shot 126 and Kailani Rodriguez and Isabella Bartell each finished with rounds of 131.
Lowry places fourth in Elko
Lowry and the Northern 3A moved a short distance to Ruby View Golf Course in Elko on Thursday, Sept. 7.
The Lady Bucks finished fourth with a team score of 445. South Tahoe claimed the team title at 407 and Wooster (411) and Fernley (436) were second and third, respectively.
Elko placed fifth on its home course and 451, followed by Spring Creek (468) and Churchill County (489).
Montoya was the low medalist for a second straight day with a round of 74, while the Lady Bucks’ Cassinelli was second at 89. Velasquez was third with a round of 92.
Rodriguez shot 11 for the Lady Bucks, followed by Novacek (116), Medicine Cloud (129) and Bartell (149).
The Northern 3A doesn’t not have a postseason tournament and the three teams that advance to the state championships are based on the final point standings.
Wooster and South Tahoe are tied for first with 13 points apiece and Lowry and Fernley are tied for third with 9 points. Elko is fifth with 5 points.
The Northern 3A moves on to Dayton on Monday, Sept. 18, and Fallon on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Lowry hosts its tournament on Monday, Sept. 25.
