Dayton scores fourth-quarter touchdown to beat Battle Mountain

After a couple of weeks off, the Battle Mountain High School football team was back on the field this past Friday at Dayton in a non-conference game.

Dayton dropped out of the Northern 3A this year and is playing as an independent and a mostly 2A schedule.

The Dust Devils broke a 6-6 tie late in the game to win 12-6. The Longhorns dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Following a punt on its initial drive of the night, Battle Mountain got the ball back and drove inside the Dayton 20-yard line, only to see the drive end on downs.

The two squads punted on their next possession, when Battle Mountain was back in Dayton territory but had a drive end on a fumble. The Dust Devils could not do anything with the miscue and punted the ball back to the Longhorns.

With five minutes left in the first half, Battle Mountain broke through for a 6-0 lead with a 1-yard touchdown run. Dayton answered back with its best drive of the opening half to tie the game at 6-6 after the missed 2-point conversion.

The Longhorns were back in the rezone midway through the third quarter but had another drive end at the Dust Devil 17-yard line.

Battle Mountain’s defense stepped moments later with an interception but the Longhorns gave the ball right back with an interception of their own.

Dayton capitalized on the turnover and took a 12-6 lead after a 14-yard touchdown pass. The Dust Devils failed on the 2-point conversion.

Battle Mountain had a handful of drives end on downs in the fourth quarter and were inside the Dayton 20-yard line with under a minute to play but could not secure the tying touchdown.

Battle Mountain makes its home debut Friday against North Tahoe at 7 p.m.
