The Pershing County High School volleyball team celebrates after winning a point at the Battle Mountain tournament.

The Pershing County High School volleyball team knows the meaning of the word 'resiliency.'

After losing to Battle Mountain at their preseason tournament, they stepped up their practices, focusing on serving and serve receive/defense.

It paid off. Pershing traveled to Fallon to play Oasis Academy on Wednesday, Aug. 30. They swept the Bighorns 25-17, 25-28, 25-12.

"Oasis is not a team to doubt. They came out hard and we were neck and neck most of the first two sets. My girls got the momentum and rolled with it. A couple of lineup changes and we found our groove," coach Monica Halverson said.

Kenya Vaughan had two aces, a kill and three digs. Yasmine McKinney played both the middle and OH position and racked up seven kills and three digs. Raegan Burrows added five ace serves, four kills and ten digs.

Anna Happy had two aces, a kill and 13 assists. Laura Gomez added one kill and one dig.

Arya Garland had two aces and 13 digs. Kyra Cerini totaled two aces, three kills and two digs. Mia Canchola had one kill.

Raegan Burrows, Anna Happy and Kyra Cerini compete against Oasis in their first league game of the year.

JV sweeps Oasis

The JV Mustangs and coach Faith Moreira also had a lot to smile about. They won their match with scores of 25-16 and 25-8.

"I am so proud of my girls and their resiliency. We played our game and had fun," said Halverson. "Lots of great teamwork and hustle from both teams. What a wonderful way to start our season."

On Saturday, Sept. 2, the team traveled to Silver Springs to play the Nighthawks.

Results were not available at press time due to early press deadlines due to the holiday.

On Wednesday, Sept. 6, they're back on their home court to play Coral Academy.

On Friday, Sept. 8, they welcome Sierra Lutheran. JV plays at 4 p.m. Varsity follows at 5 p.m.

The Mustangs are always exciting to watch. The coach says they have new cheers to pump up the crowd and add to the fun.
