Just a month after the 2022-23 season ended in Wyoming with the national finals, the Nevada High School Rodeo Association began its new season in Eureka from Aug. 18-20.
After battling through an injury and missing most of last season, Emma Garijo returned and won the average in pole bending.
She was the runner-up in both performances with times of 21.120 seconds and 22.748, respectively.
Garijo placed ninth in barrel racing with a time of 17.476 in the first performance and she was seventh in the second performance at 18.117 to finish at 36.045.
Brynn Barto picked a runner-up finish in barrel racing with an average of 35.144. She placed second in the second performance at 17.912.
Barto was ninth in breakaway roping, including a run of 5.05 in the first performance.
She placed 15th in goat tying with an average of 28.250. Barto was 10th in the first performance with a time of 10.920.
Matti DeLong earned a fifth-place finish in barrel racing with an average of 35.886, including a sixth-place run in the second performance at 18.117.
She placed fourth in girls cutting with scores of 65 and 69 and was 20th in breakaway roping at 8.17 but did not have a time on the second performance. DeLong placed eighth in pole bending with an average of 49.272 and times of 23.431 and 25.841.
Matti DeLong and Billy Delong were ninth in team roping with a time of 14.650. They did not have a time in the second performance.
Billy DeLong took home the top spot in saddle bronc with a score of 71 in the first performance. He was the runner-up in boys cutting with an average of 144, including a second-performance win with 73 points.
DeLong placed second in steer wrestling after a no time in the first performance. He bounced back to place second in the final performance with a time of 6.11. DeLong was fifth in tie-down roping with times of 12.070 and 16.480.
Lane Byrd and Cooper Hill were seventh and 10th in boys cutting. Logan Marshall and Hill placed 11th and 12th in tie-down roping.
Battle Mountain’s Eli Lancaster won the boys cutting average with 145 points. He took home the top spot in the first performance with 73 points and was the runner-up in the second performance.
Battle Mountain’s Italy Jo Holman won the barrel racing average at 34.460. She was second in the first performance eat 16.908 and she won the second performance with a time of 17.552.
Holman finished third in girls cutting with 137 points and she won the second performance with 72 points. Holman was sixth in pole bending, which included a win in the second performance with a time of 22.032.
In her first high school rodeo, Jorja Mashburn placed seventh in team roping with a time of 8.99. Mashburn was 20th in pole bending.
Junior High School Results
In the junior high division, Louise DeLong and Macy Marvel finished first and second in barrel racing. Taylor Hill and Huntley Byrd were 11th and 14th, respectively.
Ben Marvel placed fifth in boys goat tying, with Jace Barto and Chance Thomas finishing 10th and 14th.
Marvel added a runner-up finish in chute dogging and he won the second performance with a time of 2.90.
Huntley Byrd was third in breakaway roping, after she won the first performance with a time of 3.41. She did not have a time in the second performance. Battle Mountain’s Landry Meiman was fourth in breakaway roping.
Humboldt County’s Macy Marvel, Taylor Hill and Louise Delong were sixth, seventh and eighth in breakaway roping.
Macy Marvel placed fifth in girls goat tying and Huntley Burd and Louise DeLong finished 11th and 12th in goat tying.
Ben Marvel claimed the top spot in bareback riding and was second in saddle bronc and tie-down roping.
Huntley Byrd and Louise DeLong were first and second, respectively, in pole bending and Taylor Hill placed sixth. Louise DeLong and Eureka’s Henry Buchanan were second in ribbon roping and Taylor Hill and White Pine’s Sawyer Bliss placed fifth.
Macy Marvel was first in team roping and Tucker Root and Taylor Hill placed second and fifth in the rifle shoot.
The next stop for the association is Sept. 8-10 in Ely. Battle Mountain hosts its rodeo from Sept. 22-24.
