CARSON CITY — State Route 305 will be closed to through traffic for two days during the week of Nov. 6 as the Nevada Department of Transportation makes permanent repairs following major storm-related erosion.
The highway is scheduled to be closed to through traffic for two days during the week of Nov. 6. The highway closure dates will be established based on weather. State Route 305 travels between the U.S. 50 junction near Austin to I-80 at Battle Mountain.
While alternate routes are sparse in the rural area, a potential option includes State Route 278 connecting Eureka and Carlin.
Crews will excavate and repair approximately 300 feet of severe erosion and highway damage associated with post tropical storm Hilary. The storm left erosion of between three and four feet across the highway and neighboring areas near the Valley of the Moon rest area.
Hard road closures will be in place, with no vehicle access, between Valley of the Moon rest area and Antelope Valley Road. NDOT maintenance staff temporarily filled the erosion as part of initial highway repairs.
Now, crews will fully excavate and further recompact the eroded area to provide additional stability and reduce chance of potential future erosion-related fissures and roadway damage. Almost 800 drivers travel the road each day.
Storms have potential to bring water, snow, rock, mud and other potentially dangerous conditions to roadways.
As winter nears, NDOT reminds motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, and to drive attentively and slowly in inclement conditions. Winter driving safety tips are available at dot.nv.gov/winter. Motorists can visit NVRoads.com before driving for current highway conditions and controls.
