The Pershing County High School football team turned a slow start into a stampede this season, as they said farewell to its seniors — Brian Kauvaka, Bryce Gottschalk, Eddie Herrera, Aaron Kienbaum and Conner Fecht.

Last Saturday, they traveled to Wooster High and beat the Coral Academy Falcons 49-7.

The Mustangs improved to 6-1 in the Northern 2A and are now the regular season league champions.

They enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed from the Northern 2A.

"We couldn’t be more proud of the kids. They have had some adversity but they show up every day to work and get better. Congratulations to them," said coach Mike Brooks.

"Coral has played well this season and they are always really well game planned so we were interested to see how the game played out."

The coaches didn't have to wait long, as sophomore Trenton Rhodes jumpstarted the night with a punt return.

The Mustangs moved the ball down the field and Travis Donaldson ran it in.

The next drive Aaron Kienbaum caught a touchdown pass that turned into points for Mustangs.

He caught another later in the game and had an interception return for a touchdown.

Other highlights of the game included Conner Fecht's first career interception.

Tyrn Sam and Izayuh McGlothin each rushed for touchdowns.

Denzel Zaldivar returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the second half.

This Friday, the Mustangs host the opening rounds of the playoffs, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. Pershing County will face Coral Academy again.

In the other Northern 2A match-up, Battle Mountain hosts Incline on Friday at 7 p.m. Battle Mountain beat Incline during the regular season.
