Evans named Veterans Day Parade grand marshal

The Grand Marshal for the 2023 Veterans Day Parade will be Charles J. “Chuck” Evans of Winnemucca.

Ninety years young, Chuck has been a resident of Winnemucca for 50 years.  He was born in California and enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1952.

Chuck attended basic training at Camp Roberts, California, and then completed airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia.

After airborne training he was assigned to the 187th Airborne Regiment at Camp Chickamauga, Japan, which had just returned from deployment in Korea.

Chuck volunteered for transfer to the 2nd Infantry Division and was immediately sent to the Korean Peninsula where he was involved in numerous combat operations.

When the armistice was signed in July, 1953, Chuck remained with his unit in Korea until he was transferred back to the United States in 1954.

He was then stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington until being discharged from active duty in February 1955.

Chuck married his lovely wife, Shirley, in 1965 in Merced, California and in 1973 they moved to Winnemucca where Chuck worked as a butcher, farmer and miner until his retirement in 2000.

Chuck is a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.

He served as Commander of the American Legion Post 5 in Winnemucca for 10 years and the VFW Post for five years.

Chuck and Shirley have four children, and are well known members of our community.

Please come see Chuck and Shirley at the Veterans Day parade, and thank a true American hero for his service to our nation.

The parade will form up starting at 10 a.m. on Railroad Street and march out at 11:11 a.m. up Bridge Street.
