This past Friday night, the Pershing County High School football team hosted rival Battle Mountain for senior night.
The important top spot in the Northern 2A was up for grabs as well and Pershing County won 34-7, to the delight of the home crowd to take control of the Northern 2A.
The Mustangs celebrated the achievements of Eddie Herrera, Aaron Kienbaum, Conner Fecht, Brian Kauvaka and Bryce Gottschalk.
"We were fired up to play Battle Mountain," PCHS coach Mike Brooks said. "They are having a strong season and the rivalry always enhances the intensity of the game."
It was the end of a five-game winning streak for the Longhorns.
The Longhorns scored seven points in the first quarter but after that it was all Mustangs.
The Mustangs improved to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the Northern 2A.

Tyrn Sam rushed for three touchdowns for Pershing County and junior quarterback Travis Donaldson added another two scores.

"Efrain Aceves and Danny Jimenez had strong games on the offensive line,” Brooks said. “Izayuh McGlothin added a lot for us with his lead blocking and carries. Trenton Rhodes had some nice runs and played great in his first game as a punt returner."
On Saturday, Pershing County travels s to Reno to play Coral Academy (4-2).
The Mustangs can clinch the top spot in the Northern 2A and take the top seed from northern Nevada into the NIAA 2A State Championships.
"Trenton and Tyrn also had good games defensively as did Izayuh, Travis, Denzel (Zaldivar), Travis (Donaldson), Michael (Reitz), Aaron (Kienbaum) and Luis (Sanchez)," said Brooks.
Battle Mountain closes out its regular season at home on Thursday against West Wendover at 7 p.m..
The Longhorns can clinch the No. 2 seed in the playoffs with a win.
Battle Mountain and Incline are tied at 5-1 in league play but the Longhorns beat the Highlanders earlier in the season.
