Madalena wins Northeastern Nevada JV Championship at Spring Creek

Battle Mountain High School sophomore Danielle Madalena claimed the top spot in the girls 5,000-meter race at the Northeastern Nevada JV Championships held this past Friday at Spring Creek Golf Course.

Madalena stopped the watch at 24 minutes, 34.04 seconds to beat Spring Creek’s Hailey Syme (25:12.80). 

Lowry’s Brooklyn Swensen placed third in a time of 25:39.35. Battle Mountain sophomore, Sonja Sherve finished 11th with a time of 29:58.66.

West Wendover was the only to squad to have enough runners for a team score.

On the boys side, freshman Moroni Colver (20:48.09) and sophomore Eli Colver (20:53.52) placed ninth and 10th, respectively.

Sean Doney crossed the line 25th at 23:25.23 and Tristan Colver finished 25th with a time of 23:28.13.

Spring Creek held four of the top six spots, including race winner William Hodnett at 18:40.20.

 Jackpot’s Israel Garcia (18:40.47) and Jorge Avila Fragoza (19:13.35) finished second and third.

Spring Creek won the team championship with 24 points and Jackpot (52) was second.

The Northern 1A/2A Regional Championships is set for Friday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. The girls run at 10 a.m. and the boys at 12:35 p.m.

The top three teams from the Northern Region meet and the top three teams from the Southern Region meet advance to the six-team Class 2A state championship meet.

The top seven individuals from teams that did not qualify for the state meet in the Northern Region meet and the top seven individuals from teams that did not qualify for the state meet in the Southern Region meet also advance to the Class 2A state meet.

The Class 2A will score a team’s first four (4) finishers and have the fifth, sixth and seventh finishers serve to displace other teams’ scores.
